Loblaw Companies Ltd. is accelerating its push into autonomous logistics. The Canadian retail giant has expanded its partnership with Silicon Valley-based Gatik to deploy 50 driverless trucks by 2026, marking one of the largest commercial autonomous delivery fleets in North America.

Since 2020, Loblaw and Gatik have quietly piloted autonomous middle-mile deliveries in Ontario. The trucks operate without a driver onboard, transporting goods between Loblaw distribution centers and retail locations. According to Gatik, the program has already completed over 500,000 autonomous deliveries with a perfect safety record.

This expansion signals a shift from pilot to scale. Gatik’s technology focuses on short-haul, repeatable routes—ideal for retail logistics. By removing the driver, Loblaw aims to reduce costs, improve delivery speed, and future-proof its supply chain.

“This milestone demonstrates the commercial viability of autonomous delivery in Canada,” said Gautam Narang, CEO of Gatik, in a statement quoted by BetaKit.

This move reflects a broader shift in retail logistics, where automation is no longer experimental—it’s operational. As labor costs rise and consumer expectations for fast delivery intensify, autonomous solutions like Gatik’s are poised to redefine how goods move across cities.
